Hepatitis B & C accounts for more than 90% of cases of post-transfusion hepatitis and for 20% to 35% of sporadic viral hepatitis in the united states . Tatooing ,occupational needle stick injuries ,dental procedures ,operations and use of non-disposable needle injections are possible risk factors for HCV transmission . This disease has the propensity to progress to chronic hepatitis .
Chronic hepatitis B & C is often asymptomatic and appers to be mild.However,10 to 25% of cases eventually progress to cirrhosis and a propotion of these patient will die of hepatic failure or the complications of portal hypertension.
Furthermore , a propotion of patients with chronic hepatitis c and cirrhosis (scaring of the liver ) may develop hepatocellular carcinoma. You can avoid contracting it by not sharing razors,needle and toothbrushes and practicing safe sex.No vaccine for hepatitis B & c is available at present.
What is natural history of hapatitis B & c ?
In general, chronic hepatitis c appears to be slowly progressive disease that may gradually progress over 10-40 years . There is some evidence that the disease may progress faster when acquired in middle age or older.It appears that HCV , like the hepatitis virus is associated with an increased chance of developing hepatocellular carcinoma , a type of primary liver cancer. Almost all HCV-related liver cancer occurs with cirrhosis (scarring)of the liver.the exact magnitude of this risk is unknown but it appears to be a late risk factor occurring on an average of 30 yers after the time of infection. This is more prevalent in the far east than in U.S.
Who should get tested for Hepatitis B & C?
. persons who were notified that they received blood from a donor who later tested positive for hepatitis B & C.
. persons who received blood transfusion or solid organ transplant before 1995.
.Long term hemodialysis patients.
.Persons with history of using injected illegal drugs .
.Persons who have sign or symptoms of liver disease.
